. good morning, breaking news out of the south bay, a security guard shot a man in the parking lot of the senior city. what the guards saw the man doing moments before opening fire? highway 4 is back open following an overnight grass fire. i'll tell you which areas are still under a red flag warning and how high fire danger continued throughout the day. plus at least 20 city colleges in san francisco students arrested. they were demanding an audience with mayor lee and refused to budge from outside his door.

ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. we want to take you live to the lan mirandor senior center in san jose. a shooting this morning involving a security guard. pretty interesting. what the guard says he caught four men doing moments before he open fire. we're live at the scene. i'm pam cook, it's wednesday, august 21st. >> good morning to you. this wednesday morning. and we have reports of fire danger. at live storm tracker radar, nothing to show you. we have the low clouds and fog regrouping in the coast, pushing in the bay. gusty winds as well, especially in the delta, easily topping 25 miles an hour. the current numbers are in the

50s to lower 60s. downtown san francisco 58. livermore checking in with partly cloudy skies. some changes with a red flag warning. it is in place in the north bay until 3:00 thursday morning. it's been extended with the risk of possibility of thunderstorms and the chance of some lightning. of course, fire danger remains elevated. the forecast model not showing much in the way of thunderstorms in the bay area. we'll only go with the chance. 2:00 this afternoon, the bulk is up to the north, to the east. and overnight, we'll have the low clouds an fog regrouping. there's the slight chance of a thunderstorm early thursday morning. for the beaches, low clouds out there. some overcast and in the afternoon hours, patchy fog. 8:00 this morning, around the bay area, the fog is breezy out there. partly sunny this afternoon. the temperatures in the low to mid-70s. warmest locations on track to reach e mid to upper 80s

alleged burglary suspect. this is live pictures. this happened around 1:30 this morning. this is in the mira d'or senior center. the security guard of the complex saw four suspects trying to break into a car. that security guard fired at the suspects and hit one of them. all four of the suspects took off in a car. that car was found nearby. the three of the suspects got away but the person who was shot, was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. ktvu brian flores is in. he will have a live report coming up at 6:30. a shooting victim is dead after police found him slumped in the steering wheel of his car in east palo palto last night. the gunfire activated the city's shots fired system. the police found a man in the car off emit way and kavanaugh

9:30. cal fire cleared the scene near franklin canyon road around 2:00 this morning after the fire charred around 3 acres. the chp says the car fire sparked the grass fire. there are no reports of injuries and they are investigating what caused the initial fire. cal fire tells us a record dry winter is a factor in the busy fire season. much of the bay area is dry. we had windy conditions and already crisp up the grass. the agency's latest reports, during the latest round of force, lightning sparked four new fires statewide, burning 300 acres altogether. in a 24 hour period, this were 3400 strikes. the red flag warning for the bay area includes the north bay valleys and hills. there is, as mark mentioned a fire risk because of the possibility of dry lightning strikes. you combine that with the dry grass and winds, really a

recipe for fire danger. live near martinez, ktvu channel 2 news. a massive wildfire near yosemite national park has more than doubled in size and it's getting bigger every hour. it's forced the closure of highway 120 which is the main route linking the bay area to yosemite. >> this fire burned more than 10,000 acres. and that's obviously making it a tough fire for firefighters. we will show you, we just got it in. it shows how powerful the flames are. you could see where the flames skipped across the road. people in cars are trying to scramble out. so far the rim wildfire, as it's called has burned more than two homes and threatening hundreds of others. >> 800 personnel. about eight helicopters.

a number of air tankers ordered that were diverted to new fires, which hampered the operations. >> and the fire is not affecting yosemite national park itself. many tourists trying to get there are turning around and going back home. 200 seniors left san francisco's camp maydard yesterday. the vacationers also left the family camp. camp tawanga, a children's summer camp near yosemite, is now closed. a fallen tree killed a counselor last month. the 21-year-old was a uc santa cruz student. investigators are frying to find what caused the fire. you could still leave the park if you take highway 140 which will add about a half an hour to your morning commute. there's new concerns how safe the crews are battling. and coming up at 6:15, why some

people feel california's current methods of firefighting may be outdated. ktvu news website has a slide show of the huge fire near yosemite. >> time now, 6:08. early this morning, almost two dozen protesters were arrested inside san francisco's city hall. a protest aimed at saving city college of san francisco. show you some of the video. some of the people cited by the police. the group was mostly students from city college. 5:00 p.m. yesterday, they started a sit- in right outside mayor lee's office door. they want him to stop the possible closure of city college. >> it's unclear to us why the mayor won be willing to meet with the students. collectively, we decided, we would wait hoping that mayor lee would come and listen to us. >> the protesters were charged with disturbing a public meeting and trespassing. they were then released. mayor lee's office told ktvu,

saving the school is one of the highest priorities. the california public utilities commission says it has new concerns whether pg&e has national records. they say they used inaccurate documents to declare transmission lines as safe. when pg&e discovered the error, the judge disclosed the problem as an attempt to mislead the commission and public. time is now 6:10. bicyclists are gathering in an intersection rallying for safety. it's on fulsom and sixth street. that's the scene of a deadly accident last week. a truck hit and killed a 24- year-old. the truck driver did stay at

used in the george zimmerman trial to reenact the deadly confrontation. producers want psa, demanding that 26 states withstand your ground laws get rid of them. supporters of zimmerman called it widely plap . following some breaking news out of mexico. a strong earthquake just hit. according to the usgs website, it's a 6.1 magnitude. it was centered off the southern coast. it reportedly shook buildings in mexico city. there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage, but again, we're getting word of the earthquake. we'll keep an eye on the story, bringing you any more information. right now, 6.1 magnitude

earthquake in mexico. all right. time now 6:15, happening today, the nixon library in the national archives, releasing the final 340 hours of the white house tapes. the president richard nixon recorded for his own use. the tapes cover the period in 1973 between april and july. final few months that president nixon recorded the conversation in the white house. it follows a period where the president admitted responsibility for watergate and facing impeachment, richard nixon resigned in 1974, a little over a year after the tapes end. also happening, a judge will announce a sentence for bradley manning at 7:00 this morning. ktvu in washington, d.c. newsroom, poor intelligence analysts faces 90 years in prison for leaking government documents. >> manning's attorney says he should face no more than 25

years in prison. i contacted people holding a vigil, in the entrance gate of fort mead. they sent me these pictures about a dozen people asking for manning to be set free. manning was convicted on 20 charges including espionage. he handed hundreds and thousands of documents to wiki leaks while stationed in 2010. he leaked the files to spark debate on the u.s. and the prosecution asked the judge to send manning to at least 60 years in prison. i'll wait on how the sentencing will be sent down. egyptian has ordered the release of hosni mubarak. it's a move that will cause further unrest. he's been held since april

2011. meantime, a white house spokesperson, says the obama administration is reviewing military aid to egypt and denies reports that the aid was secretly put on hold. president obama has a meeting to discuss the issue. it's set to give egypt $585 million in military aid by september 27th. the wildfire burping near yosemite-- burning near yosemite. they are burning from arizona to washington state. the fires are taxing national firefighting resource. the price tag for fighting the fires now hags hit more than $1 billion dollar in the year much that's the highest cost in at least five years. critics say part of the problem may be due to california's outdated approach to fire prevention. they are saying the old methods

of staging controlled burns are effective from preventing wildfires from spreading in forest. they say the methods don't work in the dry hillsides and canyons. what should we know, sal in traffic? >> we should know things are getting busier. more than they were a half an hour ago. let's take a look at the bay bridge where the metering lights have been switched in. a 15 minute delay, maybe less than that at the end of the line. the traffic does move well once you're in the bridge itself. there's no major problems. if you're driving in oakland, day game at the coliseum with the a's and mariners. just think 12:30 to 3:30 or 4:00. it will impact the morning commute. if driving in 280, the traffic is northbound 101. we had an earlier crash and

traffic a little heavy in the area. now let's go to mark. good morning. to you. we have been concerned with thunderstorm chance. pretty quiet this morning but right now we're tracking the fog. overcast in san francisco. half moon bay, santa rosa reporting mostly cloudy skies. wind speeds have been picking up. i'll show you that in a little bit. san francisco, 58 degrees. fairfield, upper 50s. fairfield, you could seat winds out of the southwest sustained at 28 miles an hour. strongest winds shooting through the delta. this area of low pressure, this has been the main weather feature. we've been watching this the past three days or so. it's tracking in the north and east by tomorrow night. around the track, there's the chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the bay area. it's only a chance. today, partly cloudy skies,

overnight track of the low in the next 24 hours. temperatures mainly in the 60s, 70s and 80s. the focus of the thunderstorm activity will be to the north an to the east. we have the chance here. as a result, the red flag warning extended up in the north bay for marin, sonoma, montecito county, thursday morning, with a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms. you get the lightning strike and could be igniting the fire. forecast model, not showing you much. shower activity mainly in the north and to the east. we have the fog hugging our coastline, regrouping late tonight and early tomorrow morning. as i mentioned today, it will be cooler than yesterday. forecast highs this afternoon, right around 3:00. santa rosa in the upper 70s. vacaville upper 80s. right around the rim of the bay, upper 60s to lower 70s. warmest locationings inland. and san francisco, the clouds in the morning, still left over

welcome back. time is 6:25. quick thinking for people in new york including tv's dr. oz saved the life of a woman hit by a cab. it tried to turn the corner when it sped up and jumped in a sidewalk. bicycle delivery man and 24- year-old woman were hit. a plumber who went to help, said the woman's leg was badly damaged. he asked if anyone was a doctor. turns out there was a doctor, dr. oz who has an office nearby. >> a dog leash and other -- police were here immediately. they were very, very on top of it. >> the woman who was visiting from england, she lost her left foot in the crash but will survive. the cab driver says the whole thing was an accident. so far, he's not facing any charges. pressure is increasing in san diego mayor bob filner to resign. he's been accused of sexually harassing at least 16 women. the committee plans to vote on

a resolution this week asking him to step down. if he does not, the committee is asking the residents of san san diego to recall him. he has resisted calls to resign. it's a disappointing end to a baseball team and the fans. petaluma leg, one short of taking home the championship. it was still a great season for them, beat out more than 5,000 teams to play in the championship game. time 6:27. today, marks six weeks since the toddler from oakland vanished. the vigil taken in a very public place to help find a missing little girl. a security guard apparently open fires on some security suspects. the opening bell about to ring in wall street.

middle of the week much it's wednesday, august 21st. i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. time now 6:30, get a look at weather and traffic, with steve tomias. >> there's a chance right now, there's nothing showing up in the radar. it's to the east and south of the bay area. what you will notice, low clouds an fog regrouping around the bay. all the overcast towards santa rosa, fremont and santa clara valley as well. upper 50s to 60s to san francisco. san jose 57 degrees. here's the forecast model in terms of the thunderstorm chances. the best bet will be to the north and to the east. and evening hours. all of this is close enough we have to hold on to a chance, right through the bay, right through tomorrow morning. it is extended to the bay.

the bay. the bay bridge backup will stretch further to the morning because of the game at at&t park. right now it's packed with a 20 minute delay. if you're driving in san jose, good news, ramp toward 17 is reopened after a late running road work. northbound 101 is improving, northbound around old oakland road. we have breaking news in san jose. police are at is senior complex now. they say a security guard open fired on a suspect trying to steal a car. brian is there now. i understand the guard is being questioned by police? >> that's exactly right. the san jose police just left roughly five minutes ago. they also towed away the security guard's car around the same time. as you could see, still remnants of the shooting. we understand as a security guard who fired his gun is

being held for questioning by san jose police and is cooperating. the police say it happened around 1:30, near colman road. and the police say was on his way home from work, when he noticed at least four people trying to break into his father's car. when the security guard tried to confront the suspect, the suspect ran away to another waiting car. for some reason, the car stopped a short distance away. according to the security guard, it look like he was pulling something off his waistband. >> did the security guard accessed his weapon. you located one suspect, about a mile away. the suspect had gunshot wound. the person was taken to the hospital. they are in stable condition. again the suspect was found at least a block away with at least one gunshot wound. they will figure out whether he

will face charges. it's unclear if he works in a nearby senior apartment complex. police say the suspect, once released from the hospital, will be booked at the jail. we're also learning the car suspects were fleeing in was stolen from san jose. we're following a developing story in the peninsula. detectives canvassed the area hoping someone knows about a deadly shooting last night. the victim was found slumped over a steering wheel of a car. alex? >> reporter: east palo alto police are searching for the person bho gunned down the person in the street late last night. this young man was shitting -- sitting in a car. you could see the shattered glass. evidence of the deadly shooting. this young man was rushed to the hospital. early this morning, the police say he died at the hospital.

gunfire at 10:00, 2500 block of emmitt way. the department's shock spotter system detected gunfire. it picked up a total of eight shots. police responded and a that's when they found the teenager slumped in a car. it's clear he had been shot. miss aren't saying at this point, if he walked to the car or open fire. if this was a drive by. the decks can't say why this particular young man was targeted. the sergeant told us the victim was from palo alto. the investigators aren't telling us what he was doing in this street. >> when i questioned why he was in the particular area. hopefully the neighborhood canvas could answer some of the questions or maybe his family can. >> so far, police haven't released the name of the teenager who was shot to death last night. detectives who were working the scene until early in the

warning looking forward to labor day weekend of the high fire danger. keep in mind, there's dry grass and dry winds in many of the areas. ktvu channel 2 news. an antioch man badly injured in a hit and run may never walk again. 47-year-old suffered a broken back and severely damaged spinal cord. he was riding when a car hit him from behind. he's a married man, has three children. he is the only breadwinner of the familiar leech the suspect identified as a 32-year-old man from concord. the investigators say the man got into a altercation after the crash and was wounded by the police officer. he now faces possible felony charges including attempted murder. we're exactly one week away from the bay bridge closing in labor day weekend. this morning, we are pin

is forcing the evacuation of nearby campers. highway 120 is now closed. that's the main route from the bay area to yosemite, terry joins us from the newsroom with some new video. the wildfire is in a tricky spot. it's difficult to reach. terrain is steep and it made it more challenge. and this fire shows no signs of stopping. we have zero percent containment at this point. this is video from the fire lines. it shows how powerful the flames are. so far 2 homes have burned and 2300 others are threatened. >> and my daughter has a home up there and reportedly her place burned up. >> and the fire is not affecting yosemite national park itself. many tour i haves are trying to

get there, are turning around and going back home. under evacuation orders, camp mader. camp is owned and operated by the city of san francisco and hosting a special week for city families. it left the family camp and berkeley family camp. camp tuwafga a summer camp is closed as well. the officials are trying to figure out what caused the fire that opened on saturday. and live from the newsroom, back to you. and air national guardsman based in the bay area are helping out near the fire lines of yosemite. the guardsmen from the 129th rescue wing left moffet field. they are helping the battle in other parts of california.

ktvu website has a live view. and former prime minister of australia telling people not to travel to the u.s. it happened as an australian baseball player going to college, was shot to death by three teens saying they were bored. the oldest of the suspect told police, they had nothing to do, so they followed lane and shot him in the back. two of the suspects are being charged as adults. army major naddal hassan has chance to give his defense in his trial for killing 13 people and wounding several more at fort hood in texas four years ago. he's acting as his own lawyer but questioned only three of the the prosecution's nearly 90 witnesses. it is unclear if he testifies and if he does, he is expected
